Chihuahua Breed Introduction

The Chihuahua is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world! Have a read of our introduction to the Chihuahua dog breed.

The breed gets it's name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua, which is where the breed was first discovered. They are particularly well known for their distinguishing features of large eyes, large ears, and generally small size!

The Chihuahua Coat

The Chihuahua cats can be one of two types - the long coat or the short coat (or short-haired). Unusually for long-haired dogs, the long cat Chihuahua requires minimal trimming and grooming.

Chihuahua coats come in a variety of types and colours including black, fawn, white, brown, cream and chocolate.

The Chihuahua Temperament

Chihuahuas are devoted and often over-protective of one or more owners. It is for this reason that they may not be an ideal pet for a household with children. Many Chihuahuas also don't get on too well with other breeds. Their judgement of size seems somewhat lacking and will, if frightened, bite or attack bigger animals or people.

It's not all bad though. If they are properly trained, looked after and raised, they can become loyal, loving and affection little pooches. They love attention and exercise! Many people see them as a "yappy" dog breed, but again this can be solved with the correct training.
