Introduction to Bearded Dragons

'Bearded dragon' is the name used to refer to lizards of the genus Pogona, and the most commonly available as a pet is the inland bearded dragon. They are beautiful lizards from Australia which make fantastic pets due to their gentle nature, fascinating character and stunning appearance. Bearded dragons are generally brown - some a dull colour and some a lighter tan shade. Often they have pretty red or gold highlights.

Do bearded dragons make good pets?

Yes! Generally they are easy to handle, active, entertaining, moderate in size, full of character and relatively easy to keep. Compared to many other smaller or larger reptiles, bearded dragons are relatively safe for families with children - so long as hand-washing takes place just in case!

Perhaps the only disadvantage is that bearded dragons need large enclosures - so a household with space limitations probably isn't suitable. As they eat regularly (including live insects), they will need to poo regularly! For that reason, their enclosures, generally called vivariums, should be cleaned daily.

Whilst bearded dragons pose very small risk of transmitting disease, it's still important that any household with one has a regular hygiene routine - as with most other reptiles.

Bearded dragon habitat

All bearded dragons come from Australia and lived in hot, dry areas. Because of this, bearded dragons kept as pets must live in a similar environment. Their enclosures should be warm and dry, and access to water and a 'temperature gradient' are equally important.

In the wild, bearded dragons love to explore, climb and bask on rock or in branches. So your bearded dragon can feel like it's in a natural habitat - you can decorate his or her enclosure in this way. You should also provide a spotlight for your dragon to bask in!

How big are bearded dragons?

Size will obviously vary, but an inland bearded dragon will be around 10cm long when born and weight just 2-3 grams! Adult bearded dragons are normally 18-24 inches and will generally weight around 250 grams.

Bearded dragons generally grow around 4-6cm a month for the first six months, after which their growth rate will slow down. Bearded dragons grow really fast and will need more food and space than you may have expected to start with. Don't be mistaken!

How long do they live?

Whilst some pet bearded dragons have apparently lived as long as 10 years, most will live around 5 to 8. The more care you take to look after your bearded dragon - the more chance he or she has of a happy, healthy life!

What health problems might a bearded dragon suffer from?

Some bearded dragons might suffer from a calcium deficiency - generally when they are immature. This might happen for a number of reasons. Some dragons may also suffer from twitches or seizures. To help prevent any of these illnesses, simply explore our whole bearded dragons section.

Adult dragons can suffer from pinworm infestation or caccodiosis - both caused by parasites. Ederly bearded dragons might suffer from liver problems, kidney failure or gout.

Of course - proper care, hydration, thermal gradients and a balanced diet will always help to ensure your dragon is as healthy as possible!
