A gerbil cage is probably one of the first things you'll need to buy if you are getting a new gerbil. They come in all shapes and sizes so there's plenty to choose from.
Wire frame gerbil cages
Wire frame gerbil cages make an ideal home for your gerbil. There's a few things to think about before you buy which will help you make the right choice.
Make sure that the gerbil cage has easy access for you to perform your care routines such as cleaning. A large hinged lid or door is normally perfect, so long as you can access all areas of the cage easily enough.
Make sure the cage is sturdy and built well. A flimsy, wobbly or weak cage might just isn't suitable. It needs to be durable, long lasting and secure enough that your gerbil doesn't escape.
It's important the the wire frame doesn't have any sharp corners or edges so it's a good idea to double check before you buy that there aren't.
Which type of cage?
There's wire cages available for all small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and hamsters. It's quite important to choose a cage that is actually labelled as a gerbil cage. The gap between the bars in the wire frame will vary depending on the size of the animal. You don't want to buy a guinea pig cage only to find out that your gerbil can squeeze through the bars!
TIP: Ensure that the gaps between the frame bars of the cage are no bigger than 0.5 inch. This should stop even the smallest of gerbils getting through!
It's also worth checking that the thickness of the cage frame will be durable and solid enough to not allow your gerbils to chew their way through it. Always check with a member of staff in a pet shop if you aren't sure.
Most gerbil cages have a plastic base that your gerbil can't get to. This makes them easier to clean as they won't corrode from your gerbils wee-wee!
Gerbils have small feet that can get stuck easily. It's always highly recommended to choose a gerbil cage with a solid base. If you can't find one, you can always add your own later. Just ensure your gerbils can't get to it and chew it.
Plastic gerbil cages
Some gerbil cases are both made from wire and plastic. Often this can provide a more elaborate home for your gerbil with things like tunnels connecting different areas of their home.
Just beware that the plastic parts, like the tubes, can become very dirty and smelly over time if they are tricky to clean. They also have very poor ventilation.
Gerbil cages to avoid
Never choose a cage for your gerbil that doesn't look like it is well ventilated. Also don't buy a wooden cage for your gerbil - they will most likely chew their way through it in no time!
Where to place your gerbil cage
Once you have your new gerbil cage, you'll need to think about where to place it on your house. Your pet should be made to feel part of the family so it's often good to position it where you can watch it and enjoy seeing what it gets up to.
Don't position your gerbil cage near any air conditioning units, windows, heaters or radiators. This can lead to too much draft or too much heat. Ensure the cage is in a dry environment and kept away from direct sunlight.
Don't keep your gerbil cage in your garage as it can become too cold in there. Ideally your gerbil should be kept in a room where the temperature is around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you have other pets like cats and dogs, your gerbil cage should be kept out of view from them. Gerbils have sensitive ears and may find electrical sounds from televisions or computers.
Choose a gerbil cage that's sturdy, well built, safe and easy to access. Position it carefully so as not to subject your gerbil to extreme hot or cold conditions.
