Gerbils are very active little creatures and they need toys to keep them busy. Any gerbil should have access to one or more toys to keep them physically it and mentally stimulated. Here's a quick introduction to gerbil toys.
Safety should be the top priority when choosing a toy for a gerbil. Ensure that your gerbil can't get stuck inside a toy, swallow any loose parts, or cut themselves on sharp edges or corners.
Here are some gerbil toys that are tried and tested choices amongst gerbil owners.
Gerbil wheels
Gerbils like running wheels. The wheels of the toy must have a flat solid surface. This is because wheels that do not have a solid surface can trap your gerbil's tail or feet. Choose a wheel such as a Silent Spinner. Get the appropriate wheel size for your gerbil. There are gerbils that are not fans of wheels so the best tactic is simple trial and error!
Gerbil hides
Wooden hides are a good choice for your gerbil. Always be sure to double check that the wood is untreated - toxins can be very dangerous to gerbils. You can also use cardboard boxes but they are easily shredded. Wood can last longer but of course is more expensive. Sometimes, pet stores sell logs that have been hollowed out. This can be a great alternative!
Gerbil chew toys
Gerbils lov to chew - it's in their instinct. It helps them to pass the time, keep their mind active and their teeth in shape. Woods that are untreated are great chew toys. You have the option to buy them or you can even make your own. Check out this great range of gerbil chew toys.
Gerbil climbing toys
Every gerbil loves a good climb from time to time. To satisfy this need, you can have wooden ladders or even fancy see-saws. There are also available climbing tubes that you can use. You can also use PVC pipe sections - just make sure they don't get chewed.
Just like other animals, gerbils definitely love to dig. Make the other part of their cage substrate. You can also design your house or part of their cage. They can even go for have underground burrows if you have time!
As a gerbil owner it's important to supply the little fella's with toys for mental and physical stimulation. By doing this you'll help to give them a happy and healthy life!
