Foreign Breeds

This group includes a great variety of different breeds, mainly shorthairs but some with longer coats. They all have distinct looks, temperaments and needs and so if an outgoing and interesting pedigree cat is what you are after, this could be the right place to look.

There are not only some well-known, established breeds within this group, but also some newer varieties that have been purpose-bred for their looks and temperaments. In general, they are more outgoing than Persians and British, but not usually so noisy and demonstrative as the Burmese, Siamese and Orientals.

• Intelligent and playful
• Need little extra grooming - once a week is enough
• Companionable and interesting to live with
• Very playful and active (boisterous even)
• Available in all sort of shapes, sizes, colours and fur texture
• Like to be part of the family
• Some of the less furry breeds may be suitable for owners with breathing complaints
• Usually good with children (as long as they are gentle)

Minus Points

• Can be noisy
• Do not like to be in an 'over-catted' household, but do not like being alone
• May take time to be at ease with other pets
• Some varieties prefer a quiet, childless home
